Wi-Fi 6 Performance & Efficiency

The DrayTek VigorAP 805 is a Wi-Fi 6 AX3000 access point with 2.5Gbps Ethernet capability. Wi-Fi 6 dramatically improves performance and efficiency, especially in environments with many users and devices. The technology is partially based on LTE features used in mobile networks, where many connections are managed by a single AP (mast).

With more available capacity essential for voice, video, and gaming traffic, Wi-Fi 6 on the VigorAP 805 utilises:

  • Higher capacity with OFDMA and Multi-User MIMO
  • Less interference with BSS Colouring
  • Dual-band performance boost on 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi 6
  • Improved security with WPA3
  • Better battery life on mobile devices via Target Wake Time

You can configure up to 8 SSIDs per band (16 total), allowing flexible separation of networks, including internal and guest networks over mesh.

Higher Capacity with OFDMA & Multi-User MIMO

A key feature of Wi-Fi 6 is OFDMA (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access). Previous Wi-Fi standards sent data to one client at a time, then moved on to the next, which became inefficient as more clients connected, causing longer waits, packet loss, laggy video, and buffering.

OFDMA:

  • Splits channel bandwidth into smaller units
  • Uses complex scheduling to determine which users need more resources
  • Allocates more to users watching video and less to clients only checking email or on a voice call

This ensures each device receives just the right amount of bandwidth it requires.

Less Interference with BSS Colouring

Managing interference between wireless networks is challenging, especially where neighbouring networks use the same channels. If another network transmits on the same channel, performance drops as clients and access points wait for the air to clear.

Wi-Fi 6 introduces BSS Colouring (Basic Service Set Colouring):

  • Each Wi-Fi 6 network adds a unique identifier/number to its transmissions
  • Clients can distinguish whether a transmission is from their own network or another
  • If the transmission does not match the BSS Colour and is far enough away, the client can choose to ignore it

The result is better performance and improved handling of interference where channels are shared.

Dual-Band Performance Boost (2.4GHz & 5GHz)

The 802.11ax standard improves performance on both 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands. Unlike 802.11ac (Wi-Fi 5), which only enhanced the 5GHz band, Wi-Fi 6:

  • Delivers better performance at range and through walls on 2.4GHz
  • Maintains all Wi-Fi 6 benefits on both bands

This allows the VigorAP 805 and its clients to make full use of the bandwidth available across both frequencies.

2.5Gb & 1Gb Ethernet Connectivity

The VigorAP 805 includes two Ethernet ports:

  • 2.5Gb Ethernet port – supports up to 2.5 Gigabit throughput and can be linked with a faster device such as the Vigor 2136 router
  • 1Gb Ethernet port – can be used for daisy-chain connection to another access point or as a wired link to a local printer or server

In Mesh and Range Extender modes, the VigorAP 805 bridges its wireless uplink to the LAN ports, delivering fast connectivity to connected devices without requiring an additional network switch or long cable runs.

Desk Form Factor & Discreet Design

Designed for office and SOHO environments, the VigorAP 805:

  • Features a modern look that blends into desks, shelves, and meeting rooms
  • Uses hidden dual-band antennas
  • Is compact and inconspicuous in any room

You can quickly expand wireless coverage: just plug the unit into a power socket and connect it to the LAN via Ethernet or over Wi-Fi.

For environments sensitive to light, such as bedrooms or meeting spaces, the status LEDs can be disabled or scheduled, preventing them from lighting up the room.
